Friday’s Faces from the Past – Family Gathering?

mid 1930's

mid 1930’s

There is nothing on the back of this photo or a similar one that I have. I recognize the two kids as my great-aunt and my grandpa which makes this to be around the mid 1930’s. I think the woman between the kids is either Erma (the children’s mom) or her sister. She doesn’t look enough like my great-grandmother for me to be certain. The older woman, near the end, I think is Linda – my great-grandmother’s step-mom. So with that, these may be Almy relatives but I’m not sure.

EDIT: My Aunt helped fill in the people here so from left to right: Ernest Jay Moore, Joy Ann Witherell, Erma (Almy) Witherell, Bobbie Witherell, Helen Porter, Linda Almy, Al Porter, and Clifford (Bud) Almy.

  1. It almost looks like they are waiting outside a church building, especially since everyone is dressed up.

Good point! Maybe a wedding of some kind if all the Almy’s are together… I will look into that :)

  2. Or a funeral? they look a little serious (even accounting for the tendency in earlier photos not to smile as we do now and if it is perhaps a European family?).

Possibly a funeral. Did they let young kids go to funerals then? I’m not sure. And this isn’t a completely European family (if it’s the Almy side as I believe then their mother was German) but they were smilers for pictures most of the time actually.

  3. These kind of photos cause my mind to buzz with questions. I hope you get some answers!

Thank you!!!! I had wondered if there were any pictures of Jay Moore in my collection. :)
