Tombstone Tuesday: Oliver D. Hummel

Oliver Hummel Grave

Oliver Hummel Grave

My great-great grandfather Oliver D. HUMMEL was born 17th of November in 1861 in Ohio(1). I know they moved quite a bit as his father was from Pennsylvania (2) (maybe from Hummelstown, PA) and his mother from Ohio(3). I find them in Kansas in the 1880 census and then on 18th of September 1882 he married Flora DEVANS in Union City, Michigan (4). According to the 1900(5) and 1910(6) census he lives in St. Joseph County, Michigan but by 1916 he has passed away in Flint, Michigan. According to his death record, he was worked in cigar manufacturing and died of stomach cancer (7).

Interestingly enough, my great-grandfather was born in 1891 in Pennsylvania. These are the (MANY) times I wish the 1890 census still survived so I could see what they were doing there. His oldest sister, Mae, was born in St. Joseph County in 1884. From 1886-1891, the next three siblings (Mildred, Jeremiah, and Oliver – Ollie) were born in Pennsylvania. Then in 1893, Richard was born in Kansas. The next two siblings Fern (1895) and Josephine (1899) were born in St. Joseph County, Michigan (8). Whew!

I have no idea why they moved so much! Work most likely but maybe family? They went back to Pennsylvania where they had family and Kansas, where they were before. Letters would be great for figuring out what happened. Maybe I’ll get lucky one day :)
